On the Pleasures of Not Being a Room Mom

Laura and Me

Compared to last year's Christmas party, Laura's class celebration today was easy breezy, the difference being, of course, that last year I was the room mom, and I had organized this frenetic and supply-intensive game for the kids to play, in addition to the whole food and craft thing. Maybe I overdid it a little, in retrospect. And then that woman got in my face and told me her kid wasn't happy with his goody bag. Oh sweet fancy Moses. But here I am recapping the post that I just linked to.

I had only one assignment for this year's event: bring doughnut holes. That I could do. I classed them up by bringing in my Portmeirion Holly & Ivy Christmas tree-shaped plate. I believe in my heart that presentation is everything. The little girl next to Laura said, "Hey, nice plate!" I said, "Why thank you, sweetie. Have another doughnut hole." I would write "donut" hole, but I think we can try a little harder, right?

Not being the room mom, I was free to mingle and drink coffee. The room mom, bless her, brought a coffee maker. And speaking of dad-level events, there were a few dads there. One of them was kind of cute in a very preppy way. I had never met him before. He told me his name was Vandy. And I was like, "Are you real? 'Cause this whole persona is adorable." Then I remembered where I live now and reflected that "Vandy" is like "Bob" around these parts. And all the moms were there, of course, in uniform. (Pretty Neighbor and I agreed, after the fact, that the uniform was a sweater, puffy vest, jeans, boots, and a blowout.) I don't remember that we had parents attend school parties when I was a kid. You guys?

Anyway, I had my camera this time.

Is y'all's last day tomorrow? Have a good one! And here's to just waltzing in five minutes late with doughnut holes.

You know, Portmeirion is the village in Wales where they filmed the original Prisoner TV series.

What I'm saying is, you served donut holes, clearly meant to evoke the image or Rover, The Village's security system, on a plate from a place that specialized in mind control.

Do I need to connect the dots here?

OMG! What a couple of beauties! Can I get a witness?

Rick,

Whaaat?

No need to say more Rick! You're obviously a much more attentive reader than I thought.

And aw, thanks Dad!

We NEVER had parents at class parties. I don't even think we had room moms.

Love the pic of you two girls.

You Know What I'm Talking About!

Err, that might just be the voices in my head...

Anyway - Rover:

But here's the crazy part: Portmeirion Online sells them!

Clearly, Becky, you'll need one if you ever resume Room Mom duties

I would also like to point out that my Word Verification for this post is: parionad.

I ask you, who's being parionad now?

I am a hardliner on "doughnut" vs. "donut." But then, I also complain when people use the word "decimate" to mean "to nearly annihilate." I don't easily go with the flow.

Hm, I never had room moms or parents attend. Our end-of-year party was always a movie and some snacks.

Yay for being the doughnut hole mom!

(Psst - I think that Rick guy is a little parionad)

Girl, I can hardly remember a party happening in school, no less a parent showing up. Thems' was the OLD DAYS!!!

Jane,

I'm right there with you on "decimate" and really on doughnut as well - I typed in haste.

I've actually corrected people about "decimate" twice in the last few weeks...

It ain't parionad if it's true. . .

And Rick, about the Portmeirion Rover, I guess the cat's out of the bag now so MERRY CHRISTMAS BUDDY!

And I'm LOLing at "decimate," because I swear, every time I say that, I do a quick mental calculation that goes like, "Do I mean that roughly ten percent of this thing is being destroyed?"

Nerds.

Holy cow...what a gorgeous pic of you and your daughter! Beautiful..both of you!

Sounds like a much more enjoyable party this year.

Our last day of school was today and now the kids are off for 6 weeks for summer.

That is an awesome photo of you two.
Um, can I say that we live 1,000 miles apart.....?
Room mom in son's 3rd grade class bailed out after I inquired a couple weeks ago as planning this, and was asked to take the lead. Something about being busy substituting. As I work full time with two middle schoolers and a THIRD child I said sure. Then she bailed on her craft duty and any participation. I will now be up till 2:00 a.m. getting two crafts ready. Spent about $70. Wrote the letter asking for gift $$ for teacher and to bring in juice boxes and an assigned list of snacks. No response. One other mom is collecting the $$. She has only about $20 max so far. It is mid-morning tomorrow. Then I go to work. Cannot wait for the weekend. My kid is thrilled and happy so that is all that matters.

I concur, you look gorgeous--both of y'all!

Decimate...I have NEVER thought of this. The things you learn on the Internets.

Michele! That is craziness! You are an army of one! I can't believe everyone left you in the lurch like that. Maybe they only need one craft? What snacks are you doing? Simplify is what I say. And I bet your boy will love it no matter what you do.

Mad Woman, summer vacation! Wow, happy last day of school!

Not to be totally redundant but you and Laura....GORGEOUS!

I loved this post. However, sadly for me, I am a room mom this year. We have FOUR per classroom; that's how crazy it is. We had a party today that involved four "stations"-- a dreidel station, a Christmas cookie decorating station, a story station (where volunteers read holiday stories), and an applesauce-making station with latkes. It was kind of insanity. And then, tomorrow we have ANOTHER party-- pizza, bookmark-making, and cookies.

Aw, thank you Michele!

Beth, I think this is what Judith Warner means with her book title, _Perfect Madness_. You should blog about it!

I'm also on sabbatical this year from the whole room mom business. I love Laura's glasses! -Roberta

You know, sometimes I feel like you are my bruther from anuther muther. I have always driven everyone crazy every time I organize a pot luck function by nagging and chastising everyone about bringing "appropriate and attractive serving dishes". Because you know, there's always somebody who brings there stuff in the damned Tupperware. And as you said re: doughnuts "I think we can try a little harder, right?"

I have to agree with Wayne. What a lovely picture of you and Laura. Y'all are beauties!!
