Facing My Fear, or, Childbirth is Much Worse, Right?

So today I have an appointment at the spa at Lifetime Fitness to get a bikini wax. Is this way more than you want to know? Don't worry, it's not a Brazillian or a Hitler mustache or anything crazy. My appointment was for 7:15 tonight, but they just called and left me a message asking if I can come earlier. Gulp.

So I have to call them back and tell them yes, because probably by saying "No, I need until 7:15 to drink and mentally prepare myself," I'm keeping an aesthetician from getting home to her kids, or maybe from setting her tivo to record "Jon&Kate Plus 8." I don't want to be that person, you know?

I've had this done several times in the past, though never frequently enough to be routine, and it isn't like it hurts THAT bad. It was way worse the time I tried to do it myself. Way. worse. But in my experience, it depends a lot on the person doing it and her technique. I've never put myself in these people's hands, so I'm a little scared. Just wanted to reach out to you good people in my hour of need. I hope you have a lovely evening. And remember this?

UPDATE: bikini wax is over and the patient is resting comfortably. The aesthetician was a 60-ish year-old woman who did a really good job--didn't hurt nearly as much as some I've had. She had me change into one of those little disposable thongs. . .and that is all we need to say about that. The wax lady, whose name was Brenda but I called her Ma'am, was the type to tell you exactly what you need to have done to yourself, and she was exactly right. She appraised me and said, "I want to do your eyebrows," and then she introduced me, rather pointedly, I thought, to their head hairstylist. I left with an appointment for brows and new highlights, and the stylist's promise of, "I'll make you beautiful! Or, you know, you are already beautiful, but I'll make your hair beautiful."

I, who am facing childbirth any day now, still can't deal with the idea of bikini waxing. (Unless they now offer epidurals.) So good on ya, Beck! You are tougher than I.

That said, you've done it before, so you know that it will end quickly. Youcandoit!

Oh--and "Hitler mustache"? That is just so wrong.

Girl, I got one word for you: Alase.

I've gone for the Brazilian before and I shared more with that woman than I normally do with my husband. Good luck to you.

I just can't say a word. Not a single word. Anything I said would just reveal how incredibly old, modest and peculiar I am.

Since I'm trying to keep up a young-ish facade, I'll pass on this one. Clue: I will be buying Barbara Bush built-in-bra-cup bathing suits from Talbot for as long as they're in business.

that sounds so nice - going to the spa at Lifetime. even though it was for torture - the kind you ask for even.

casey has had the brazilian! wow!

I went in for my first waxing about 8 weeks postpartum, and the young woman was so very apologetic about the whole thing. I just laughed and laughed. YOU CALL THAT PAIN?
On the other hand, I use all my childbirth coping techniques at the dentist and still dread and hate it.

Carrie, I am maximally impressed that you were getting your business waxed 8 weeks postpartum. Go mama! And I know, Casey got a Brazillian, woohoo!

Yeah, I still haven't braved that one. It's not the pain - it's the social awkwardness that freaks me out.

But if I went in for just an eyebrow wax would Brenda be able to know what else I needed done......
--Michele, who was so pumped up about her birth she would have shown the video to even the mailman but will not have anyone tend to her there for a wax, but that's just me.

I think I'd be more afraid of the "evaluation". I'm not sure my self-esteem can handle the list which would surely be 12 miles long!

LOL... my word verification is "nuteroil" which, I guess, might be what you apply to your skin after a wax??

I'm just trying to figure out the mechanics involved? There's an evaluation?
I did try this once at home. There was blood, missing skin, and still plenty of hair afterward. That was about as good of an idea as a home perm.

Glad you survived, and are doing your part to keep the economy afloat with your future appointments :)

Yeah so the first time I got a wax? I was 8.5 months pregnant. You know, bc you want your lady bits to look purdy on the big day, right? SUCH A BAD IDEA. I shake with fear in the face of a wax type professional now....

I haven't yet braved the waxing world. I'm mildly curious, but that's as far as it's gone.
