I Got My Hair Did

New hairdid.

On Wednesday evening I went to the salon and spa place at Lifetime Fitness, where I usually get my hair done. The girl I go to has developed this three-color, Neopolitan ice cream thing she does to my head--highlights, lowlights, midlights (?), I don't know. It was well overdue, as you could see in my post the other day.

When I checked in at the salon, they told me that my amazing new sister-in-law, Robin, had called them and gotten me a gift certificate. It covered my hair, it will cover a massage and more, and I think it would cover having the aestheticians come paint my house. I was beyond tickled. Just awesome. And then I enjoyed a two-hour conversation with my stylist about all the amazing health properties of many different berries. Maybe some good advice in there. Also the conversation was about how she still can't stand her husband and if he misses his flight he better not call her from the airport because he can just deal with it on his own. Or how maybe they can just get a duplex with a washer and dryer in the middle and live in separate halves, because she will never fall out of love with him, but she is getting too old for his crap.

While we're looking at my hair, I will tell you that I am terrible at taking pictures of myself in the mirror. Like, I took probably twenty pics of myself in an attempt to get my whole head in the frame. It got to be funny. Here's the only other one that worked.

hair with wallpaper

Note the crazy eyes. But really I wanted to show you this wallpaper in my bathroom. Are you having a total Charlotte Perkins Gillman moment? (Your homework for the day is to click that link and read that story, if you didn't read it in Freshman English, 'cause it is a corker.) When we first moved in to this house, I couldn't decide if the wallpaper was pretty or ugly, so I decided it was pretty, and we called the bathroom the domus aurea, because it is kind of crazy huge. Huge in that mid-nineties-big-bathroom-fad kind of way. Now, almost four years in, it is getting on my nerves. I can see things in it. The Gillman story explains what I mean:
It [the pattern] is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study, and when you follow the lame uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide--plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions.
Matt and I agree that we can see strange bulbous fruits in there, and mosquito-like things, and weird scaphoid shapes. I've decided it's not pretty. But as much as I like color and pattern, I'm kind of terrible at picking out paint and stuff. Anybody have a bathroom that you love? It is a project for the future, definitely.

I have not been good about getting in and responding to y'all's comments, but I read them at many points in the day, and they make me feel so much better. And then my mom or dad will call me and say, "Did you see what so-and-so said? How nice!" And I say, "Yes, it's like they really like me or something!" I appreciate all your good thoughts and prayers so much. I am just doing normal stuff, and enjoying it, but I was telling Matt, it's like the days go on so long that it's hard to be brave all day and not crack a little bit. So I do, some. Last night Pretty Neighbor came over and we watched that movie about Vogue, The September Issue. That was good. We also ate honest-to-God potato chips. Decadence!

I wish I had hair like that. It's got so much body and is such a lovely color.
The only way I get that much body is NEVER or with one of my trusty bump-its.

I love, absolutely love the hair! The color and length are great. And that Robin! What a nice thing for her to think of! She's a peach. Now about that wall paper, I like it.It's a good neutral color. I'm glad we're going to be seeing you Sunday.I'll look for the hidden creatures in your wallpaper- kinda like those "Highlights" magazine's hidden pictures of yore.

Besides your hair, I love your purple shirt and the yellow one underneath it. I was looking at flowers the other day and said to my Hubs, "I love yellow and purple together." I think you match the wallpaper, which I like.
So sweet of your SIL!
I think we all want to be adopted by your family.

Wow--FAB hair. Darn that Robyn! I can see that Katie and I will need to bring our A game. Robyn, it is ON, girl. On. You hear me?

Your bathroom is massive. I like it, though. It reminds me of the golden palace Jason and I used to have back in the big D. Now our bathroom is only slightly larger than the one in economy class.

That wallpaper IS slightly disturbing the more that you look at it. I liked it at first, but I've been staring at it for 20 minutes and I'm feeling a little wonky now.

What? I'm at work.

Oh, and LOVE the hair.

We're getting our bathroom re-did RIGHT THIS MINUTE so I'll let you know how it turns out.

I was going to say you should go get your hair did because I knew it would make you feel better, but then I didn't because I didn't want you to think that I thought you should go get your hair did, know what I mean? Man do you have a GREAT head of hair. It looks amazing! And I absolutely love your SIL for treating you, as it should be! Gorgeous!

About the wallpaper, you know, I love me some Urban Grace when it comes to stuff like that. Check out her blog.

You are gorgeous, dahling!!! I have always thought that you look just like me. We could be twins!!

That wall paper is sort of mesmerizing in a disturbing way.

The hair is great! You are much braver than I. I never color my hair. I'm always afraid of green. It is never a good look for hair.

Whatever your stylist is doing, she should keep doing it. I hope her husband didn't miss his flight.

Have you seen that lady crawling around behind the wallpaper yet? You MUST release her!

I hope you got an awesome massage, too.

I'm with you on The Yellow Wallpaper story. I was in a big Mrs. Dalloway phase for a long time too. Still love ole Virginia W. We too have a ridiculously big wall paper. We recently went with the deep taupe paint color and I like it. Makes it feel just a wee bit smaller and more cozy even though it's huge. I'll try to take a photo of it one day and share my bathroom with you. I've been looking at the Liberty line on Target.com now too. They should pay you commission.

Hi, pretty. I will tell a story about CPG for you elsewhere, but you & I could be the 30something Betty & Veronica, with our voluminous piles of contrasting-color, veronica-lake hair, plus also I have been loving the 3 t-shirts-at-once look.

Your family is so great; God is good. xx

You have awesome hair. I'm going to try to figure out your field based on the hair alone.

"Yellow Wallpaper" contains my all-time favorite use of the word "smooch," for the worn-out "smooch" she leaves along the wall with all her crazy crawling.

I read through these comments, and my burning question is thus: is it Robin, or Robyn? Cause Amy spelled it with the "y". Sister fight! In either event, what a rock star sister in law!

Becky said...

Ha Meghan! It's Robin, not with the y, and actually after she left her comment Amy texted me and said, "OMG I spelled Robin's name wrong!" So yeah, sister fight!

Perpetua, if you have a Unified Hair Theory of Academic Specialty, I need to hear about this! Answer: 18th Century and the Novel.

Thanks for the hair compliments guys! My mother in law suggested that I sleep sitting up to preserve the blow out. You know how you never get it to look that good again. She also just called me from her Target to tell me they had the Liberty raincoat. I try to get out and it sucks me back in!

Great did, dude! I miss you and your hair.

The wallpaper? I'm seeing griffins with the head of Beaker the Muppet AND those crazy lizards who get up on their hind legs and run across water while blowing out those fan-things on their cheeks. Get rid of it.

* My word verification is "buttgrog." Gross.

Awesome 'do, dude. Love it.

Creepy wallpaper, definitely a project in the making. I have seen some lovely bathrooms on Apartment Therapy done in that RH Silver Sage color, which I actually have in my bedroom. It is so trendy, though, that it will not make your room a snowflake. However, it does have some color while still being neutral, and looks nice with whatever accents/decor you choose.

I covet your hair. And your top.

You make that wallpaper look goooooood.

You are a great writer, I totally appreciate the difficulty of photographing yourself. I was trying to take a picture of my tattoo one day, it's on my ankle, you wouldn't think that would be so hard. I ended up with some pictures that really showcased my dry and hair leg... Anyway, keep writing & I will be thinking of you out in blog land.

No! Do the bathroom now! If you are in there throwing up, the last thing you need is that wallpaper surrounding you. Pay someone to strip it and paint the walls a nice cheery color. If it is a lot of wall, put white wainscoting (sp?) on the bottom half and colored paint on the top.

Becky:
Don't ask me what led me to your blog because the trail by which I got here become so convoluted I lost track. But I got here and will boldly issue several points: 1)Great hair, I will be taking your photo with me to my hair appt. next month--for real. Purple T-shirt is pretty darn cool too. 2) How are you a matron, for crying out loud, even if a suburban one? Is this a Southern thing that has not yet penetrated the plains? I'm probably old enough to be your mother and thus like to believe I barely qualify for such a label, so I'm left to guess that you have a penchant for hyberbole or understatement, can't quite tell. 3) In regard to your previous post, I simply wish you every ounce of strength, will continue to check your blog for updates as well as more of your entertaining musings, and will keep you in my prayers. Hope that's OK.

Thanks guys! Suburban Co, that is not a bad idea. I have had a paint chip that I really like for a long time, it's Behr's Dolphin Fin, and it wouldn't be such a big thing to get that done.

Mary and Kitten, thanks so much for coming by and for commenting. I love knowing you are new friends out there in blogland!
